Love, loyalty and friendship are what the Claddagh symbol represents. Below are examples of beautifully etched items with a Claddagh theme, all which can be personalized to make the gift even more unique.
The origin of the “Claddagh symbol” is attributed to Richard Joyce. While on route to the West Indies, he was captured by Algerian pirates and sold as a slave to a Moorish goldsmith, who would over years train him as an apprentice. He became quite skilled, earning the respect of his master. Back in Britain, King William III had ascend to the throne of England . One of his first actions was to send an ambassador to Algiers to demand the immediate release of all British subjects. The Moorish Goldsmith upon hearing of the imminent release, offered Richard the hand of his only daughter and half his wealth in hope that he might stay. Richard declined and returned to Galway. Back in Ireland a young women was faithfully waiting for the return of her true love. Upon returning home to his love, Richard presented her with a gold Claddagh ring, a symbol of their enduring love. Two hands to represent their friendship, the crown to signify loyalty and fidelity, and the heart to symbolize their eternal love for each other. They married, never to be separated again.
